Thursday 11 June: “The Father Costume”: A Dystopian Odyssey?

This week we continue our exploration of myth and emotion with a session introduced by Petra McQueen on Ben Marcus’s short story, “The Father Costume” (Leaving the Sea, London: Granta Books, 2014, pp. 179-194), in which a father and son flee an unknown danger across the sea. See our poster: P-Marcus

Referencing Homer’s Ulysses, we will be exploring how Marcus creates a mythic world in which language has a physical presence and where terms of reference are thrown out without explanation. We will also be discussing how Marcus creates the emotions of unease and fear through language.
